Grandfather’s Archives
Archive negatives of old-time Gomel city, captured by my grandfather.
Less than a project, more than a memory
As the saying goes, time gives value to photos.
My grandfather Valeryj was born in Belarus in Gomel city. Like many others in Soviet Union, he was picturing his life with analogue cameras like “Zenith” or “Smena”.
The pictures taken for himself, after decades, turn out to be a real treasure and a full-fledged documentary picture of life and everyday routine.
This series of photographs of Gomel in the period from the 60s to the 80s was taken from negatives that I found and carefully revised after grandfather’s passing away.
In order to preserve the feeling of antiquity, the images are presented in the original scan, without editing and cropping the scans itself.
Special thanks to my friend Roman Perevoznikov for help in scanning and sorting out negatives.
